Discount usability evaluation is a formative evaluation method to predict how well/fast/easily a UI prototype will work, without having to do full-fledged usability testing. Heuristic evaluation, in which a small number of expert reviewers critique a UI prototype, and other discount usability methods, in which 2 or 3 typical users do talking out loud sessions with a prototype. Two other methods, the cognitive walkthrough and user modeling, are mentioned and are discussed in other web lectures.

The goal of this assignment is to learn how to perform a heuristic evaluation of a real user interface. You have been hired as a consultant to another group in the class. They are building a new user interface for their course project, but they would like some outside assistance.

A sample heuristic evaluation of an e-commerce system, conducted by Jim Foley in 2004. I used the system for 2 hours, talking out loud to the product manager who transcribed my comments into this report. The problems are not organized by seriousness/impact, which would be a normal next step prior to acting on any of the problems.

This lecture covers (in relative detail) evaluation via various forms of cognitive modeling: Fitts' Law, Keystroke-Level Modeling and GOMS. It also includes simple examples. The last section covers a comparison of other evaluation methods (heuristic evaluation, software guidelines, cognitive walkthrough and usability testing) from a CHI '91 paper.

An overview of the heuristic evaluation technique and a presentation of nine general design principles. The principles are similar to many other similar lists: be consistent, provide feedback, speak the user's language, etc., and detailed descriptions and examples are provided for each guideline.
